Associate/Assistant Professor in Learning and Neuroplasticity

The Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at the University of Iowa invites applications from candidates studying behavioral, cognitive, or affective change. This search is part of a multiyear effort to build a community of collaborative scholars who study the mechanisms and processes of learning and plasticity in humans and non-human animals at multiple levels of analysis and from a diversity of perspectives. This search is open to applicants across all areas of psychology (e.g., clinical, social, developmental, and cognitive psychology) who use behavioral and/or neuroscience approaches. We are also interested in applicants from allied fields (e.g., robotics, education) and those who work in interdisciplinary areas (e.g., computational neuroscience, socioemotional development). We are focusing these hires at the rank of assistant and associate professor. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis, with screening of applicants beginning on September 4, 2018. Appointments will begin as early as August 2019.

The University of Iowa is a leading public university located in Iowa City, a midsize community with a high quality of life. The Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences is experiencing vigorous growth and enhancement, including construction of a new building. The University is also making substantial investments in neuroscience—already a large community with more than 100 faculty members across five colleges and 26 departments—including the recent founding of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute and the creation of a new undergraduate major in neuroscience. The DeLTA Center brings together a vibrant campus-wide community of researchers interested in all aspects of learning and development.

There are extensive opportunities for collaboration with researchers in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Carver College of Medicine, the College of Education, and the College of Public Health. The university also supports a variety of state-of-the-art research facilities, including the Iowa Magnetic Resonance Facility, which includes 3T and 7T scanners, the Central Microscopy Research Facility, and the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics.

Qualified applicants should have a Ph.D by August 15, 2019. Candidates must identify principally with a traditional psychological sub-discipline or may adopt an inherently interdisciplinary perspective; have a record of research productivity and external funding commensurate with their level of experience. Independent teaching experience is desirable.

Lecturer Position for the Academic Year 2019-20

The Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at The University of Iowa invites applications for a non-tenure track lecturer position for the academic year 2019-20, beginning August 17, 2019. This position is renewable in one-year increments for the first three years (2019-2022), and renewable thereafter in three-year increments. Opportunities for advancement to Associate Professor of Instruction and Professor of Instruction are available after the first six years, renewable in 5-year increments. Applications are sought from candidates with a demonstrated potential for outstanding undergraduate teaching primarily in social or clinical psychology. Candidates should also be able to teach elementary psychology as well as undergraduate research methods and data analysis courses. Duties of the position include teaching undergraduate courses, mentoring undergraduate students, and developing new curricula.

Evaluation of the following required and preferred qualifications will be made through (1) descriptions of educational and work experiences in the letter of interest, (2) accomplishments and productivity addressed in the curriculum vitae and teaching statement, (3) evidence of effective teaching (e.g., student evaluations, example syllabi or handbooks), and (4) information provided from professional references.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Psychology or a closely related field is expected by the start date of the appointment, August 17, 2019.
  • Demonstrated prior experience in teaching undergraduate courses in social or clinical psychology.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated prior experience in mentoring students.
  • Interest in developing new curricula such as online courses and certificates. 
  • Scholarly interests related to the educational mission of the University of Iowa and the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences.
